After a continental breakfast gathered at your leisure until 9 am, classes will span roughly five hours in the studio. Initial work will focus on sketches and inspiration from the surroundings. Melissa will guide you through transferring the drawing to the lino-block. Discussions of what elements, design and forms will render the best image on the marvelous medium of block printing. Carving techniques and tools will be introduced. Once a handful of prints have been made on luscious paper, each of you will then wander into the ceramic studio to print on clay tiles. Working with Melissa's joy, knowledge and wild success as a professional artist is a dream. You will be challenged, encouraged, and enjoy the pursuit of excellence.
A mid-day meal, la comida, will be served on the terrace. Lu, a remarkable chef, wine expert, and lively personality, will pair each meal with local wines while she regales you with stories of her inspiration and experience.
Sietas are encouraged before adventuring or returning to the studio for independent work in the afternoons.
In the afternoon, you are welcome to join us to walk part of the Senda de Oso, an exceptional rails to trails experience in the heart of limestone cliffs along a cool stream. Bring your suit! We may even find a swimming hole in which to relax and play!
After the morning in the studio and la comida, join us to tour La Colegiata de San Pedro, the local church built in the 11th century, known for its exceptional pagan gargoyles and adornments. A remarkable story of laymen learning the craft of carving stone under the order of Catholicism, but imbued with rural life and pagan ideas.
Enjoy a free afternoon to work in the studio on ceramics or simply relax and explore the beautiful surroundings of Senda d'Arte.
In the afternoon, join us to hike up to the Parque de la Prehistoria, an extraordinary park dedicated to pre-historic cave art and artifacts. It is part zoo, part park and part museum. In the park there are two herds of some of the genetically oldest horses still living today. They are lovely. The museum is extensive exhibits of pre-historic life in the area and relics. Then there are four caves with extraordinary replicas of the most famous cave art in Spain and France. It is an afternoon not to be missed.
A movie night on the terrace! S'mores and more around the fire and a projected film on the terrace!
This brings us to a Farewell Dinner at Bar Narciso, the oldest bar in Asturias!
Departures and farewells. And plans to return!
Melissa Hefferlin studied art in Los Angeles and Tennessee before crossing behind the Iron Curtain to become the only American at the Russian Academy of Arts during the Soviet period, now known as the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. This rigorous academic training honed her draftsmanship and instilled an enduring respect for form, color, and historical continuity. Currently, she offers an art retreat that includes innovative techniques like ceramics and linocut printing, allowing participants to explore their creativity.
Since turning professional in 1993, Melissa Hefferlin has utilized oils and various 2-D media to solve visual puzzles and tip the scales towards harmony and beauty in a restless world—a romantic goal indeed. Her works often feature recurring avatars, most notably Wilhelmina, a winged rabbit that embodies freedom, vulnerability, fleet-footedness, and mischievous wisdom. Engaging in an art retreat enhances her creativity, which also extends to ceramics and linocut printing, enriching her artistic landscape. Furthermore, languages play a significant role in her artistic journey; she speaks English, Russian, and Spanish, along with enough Italian to eat well and navigate the country’s art supply shops, including those along the Senda d'Arte.
Melissa Hefferlin co-hosts An Artful Life: Curious Conversations about How Humans Make and Use Art, a live videocast with Swiss-American photographer Nina Froriep. The interviews with art professionals, including discussions about art retreats and techniques like ceramics and linocut printing, stream live on LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube, and are archived on those platforms and her website, Senda d'Arte.
Melissa Hefferlin is a Signature member of Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists, and Pastel Society of America. She exhibits at Cutter & Cutter Fine Art and Reinert Fine Art, and her work is showcased in museums worldwide. Additionally, she participates in art retreats like Senda d'Arte, where she explores various mediums including ceramics and linocut printing.
